Teeth Retainers

whatsapp

A retainer helps hold the teeth in their final position after braces or Invisalign are removed. With retainers, you can help your teeth stay straight and prevent the movement that naturally occurs after braces or Invisalign. The answer is yes. Whether you prefer removable or more permanent options, you will always need a retainer to maintain the position of your teeth. Teeth move in response to forces. Everyday, there are constant multidirectional forces that are trying to make your teeth more crooked. Additionally, it is natural for the teeth to want to move back into their original position as they have a long memory. With a teeth retainer, you can prevent this from occurring. To ensure you obtain lasting results from your orthodontic treatment, a permanent or non-permanent dental retainer can be used as the last stage of your treatment. Most commonly, as the final step after wearing Invisalign trays or braces. A retainer maintains teeth straightening and bite correction achieved in the last stages of an orthodontic treatment. It can also minimise the natural shifting of teeth, which can occur after braces are removed. Wearing them after braces can help remind your teeth to stay in their new positions and maintain a beautifully straight smile. At Best Dental Clinic LLC, we have the innovative tools, equipment and orthodontic solutions to tailor a comfortable teeth retainer in Sydney that guarantees a long-lasting smile.

TYPES OF TEETH RETAINERS AVAILABLE

At Best Dental Clinic LLC, we have two popular types of dental retainers available to you; removable and fixed.

The removable retainer is the most prescribed, resembling a clear plastic mouthguard. They can be easily removed and put back on again in the same fashion making eating and cleaning easier. In some cases, you may be given a removable plate with a wire. This wire is fixed to an acrylic plate that sits comfortably at the roof of the mouth and can be taken on and off similarly to a clear moulded retainer. The other type of teeth retainer is a bonded or fixed retainer. This treatment is adhered to the back of your teeth with a strong dental filling material. These are used in cases where the teeth are likely to crowd or shift back into their original place. In this case, a thin wire is cemented to the back of the teeth to hold them into their new position long-term, often permanently.  The fixed retainer is usually fixed behind your front teeth from canine to canine, so we will also provide a removable night time retainer to cover all of your teeth which is  worn on top of the fixed retainer  for added protection.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A TEETH RETAINER

Removable retainers
If your orthodontist recommends a removable clear retainer, you are required to have an intra-oral scan of your teeth taken, where a 3d mould is created at the lab.. Doing so will help your orthodontist develop a custom retainer that fits your new teeth like a glove. A retainer will then be fitted over your teeth. It is common to experience some pressure immediately after you wear a retainer as your mouth adjusts. Pressure subsides once your teeth grow used to the plate. If your retainer rubs or cuts into your gums, inform your orthodontist as it may require further adjustment.

Permanent wires
A fixed retainer involves a thin wire being bonded to the back of your teeth using dental cement that’s hardened and cured under special lighting. This process takes a few minutes. Your orthodontist and team will teach you the necessary steps to correctly clean them.

How long do I have to wear retainers for?

Your treatment instructions may vary according to your specific needs. Most orthodontists will instruct you to wear a retainer every night indefinitely after your braces have been removed. A lifelong commitment to a retainer may be intimidating, but it’s crucial to preserve the final results of your orthodontic treatment.

After braces removal, teeth can drift to its original positions. To keep the smile in line, we need to use teeth retainer like- Essix retainer, Hawley retainer and fixed retainer.
